The Tongaat-Hulett Group (South Africa) owns the bagasse power generation facilities installed at their Maidstone Mill.Boiler plant.

Bagasse is the fibrous residue remaining after sugarcane or sorghum stalks are crushed to extract their juice.

About 80% of the installed capacity is renewable energy. The other 20% is usually from coal, which is used to balance the fuel needs particularly in the case where bagasse is used as a product for paper manufacture or animal feed.
